Despite not posting for 10 months my traffic has actually increased, although most of my traffic now comes via search engines rather than refferals. If I can get my visits from refferals back up again I should get significantly more traffic than 10 months ago.

I found the same thing. After an extended break, the only real traffic my blog got was from search engines.
